Many years ago a cable movie channel let an intern play editor for a day. Off the shelf came, "Liar, Liar" and off he went to work. His goal for the day? Change barely offensive dialogue into family-approved rhetoric.
The scene: Retrieving his car from the impound lot, lawyer Fletcher Reede notices a new scratch on the side. Irate, he begins taking it out on the lot boy.
The dialogue:
"You scratched my car!
"Oh, yeah, whatcha gonna do about it?"
"NOTHING! If I take you to small claims court, you probably wouldn't show up, and if you did and I won you'd just stiff me anyway. So, I'm going to turn around and just take it in...the ear...
Feeling confident in his choice of insults, the intern quickly inserted ...the ear... into another movie or two (The Wayans brothers "Bulletproof" for one), punched the clock and called it a day.
Is there anyone my husband knows that has not heard this story? I don't think so. Is he overjoyed to have a day devoted to this most ridiculous of dialogue dubbing. I am positive there isn't a person he runs into today that won't hear his over-excited re-telling of an intern's innocent attempt at real job for a day...

In My Heart On Thursday
"The nursery rhyme ends when a spider comes along and frightens Miss Muffet straight off her tuffet. I have wondered about what kind of lesson this is for a young girl. If you're eating your curds and whey and a spider comes along, I don't think there's anything wrong with picking up a newspaper, smashing it, and going back to your breakfast."

"Adventure is fun and exciting and not like anything at home. It's looking back and knowing you can do something-because you did it."

In My Heart On Thursday
Before the thought that's inspiring me, a bit of business to get out of the way.

And now the words you came here for...
"No amount of falls will really undo us if we keep on picking ourselves up each time.
We shall of course be very muddy and tattered by the time we reach home.
But the bathrooms are all ready, the towels put out,
and the clean clothes in the cupboard."
-C. S. Lewis

In My Heart On Thursday
"I will not fail you, my love. I will continue on the path we shared, and I know you will be there to help me, as you always were. And when we meet again at the journey's end, and we laugh together once more, I will have a thousand things to tell you."

In My Heart On Thursday-
"Dante was so wrong. At the lowest point, at the nadir of the ninth circle of hell, Satan will be sharing eternally cold space with treasonous brownnosers who abandon their principles and do what is wrong for the sake of a good grade, or applause. And these brownnosers will have to lick Satan's razor-studded butt forever and ever, with their tongues."

In My Heart On Thursday
"One of our sons was spending a few days incarcerated in a local facility to 'pay his debt to society.' As I looked at his sorrowful countenance behind that glass wall, my heart nearly broken, I only wished I had held and rocked that baby boy. I couldn't, as hard as I tried, think of a specific time when I had held him on my lap and kissed his head, face, and ears and held him close to my heart.
I had washed that boy, scolded him for misdeeds, sent him to school, even taken pictures of him, but I couldn't remember putting my lips next to his ear and whispering tender, loving, happy words that might have echoed in his memory when he needed them. When my arms couldn't get to him through that terrible glass barrier, I wanted to remember how it felt to hold him and I wanted him to remember how it felt to be held and loved by his mother.
So, if I could go back, I would hold and rock and sing and whisper love to my child every single day."
-Excerpt from Delta, Utah, Ensign Magazine, July 1996
